Although Dutch is my native language, I can also read, write, and speak English fluently. Although many people in the Netherlands understand English reasonably well, if you really want to reach a new audience, you need to speak to their hearts. Speak their language. I can help you there. If you would like me to translate something for you from English to Dutch or vice versa, please let me know. Some things I translate(d):
  • Blockbuster film subtitles into Dutch for KVH Media Group, a company that provides on-board entertainment for sailors
  • Press releases for fresh produce news site FreshPlaza (Dutch to English)
  • Articles from Dutch to English for Sabaku, Surinam Airways' inflight magazine
  • Test questions and related documents for SalesAssessment.com from English to Dutch
  • Press releases and whitepapers for Webtrends (English to Dutch)

  • Several apps and manuals from English to Dutch
  • Blog Action Day 2009 website from English to Dutch

My latest book, Mothered, is a collaboration with my friend, talented artist Ado Ceric. He had a basic idea for a dystopian story with lots of nostalgic elements. Inspired by his idea and the lovely artwork he created for it, I developed it into a full-length novel.

Struglend Tales is my first novel, published in 2012. It is a comic fantasy book, and the first in a planned series. During the process of writing and preparing for publication (both electronically and in print), I gained a lot of knowledge about those two processes, and I would be happy to help you if you are struggling with making a book.

2012 saw the birth of a new character of mine, Chief Inspector Jewel Friedman. In this short story collection, she stars in five downright bizarre cases, the absurdity of which is owed largely to the writing prompts the stories are based on. Like Marmite, you love it or you hate it, but the lovers have won out: more stories featuring Jewel Friedman are in the works.

You can find out more about my fictional writings at Mekes Books, where I also run a blog.

Writing for the web

The Celtic Music Magazine is the online source for fans of Celtic music, run by Marc Gunn. I have regularly written CD reviews for the magazine.

A Hardy Developer's Journal explores the fascinating world of indie adventure games in all its wonderful facets. Among my contributions for the site are an ongoing article series called Making History, about incorporating history into game design, an interview with the makers of the highly-acclaimed adventure game The Dream Machine, and several reviews.

Since 1997, The International House of Mojo has been the centre of the universe (or at least the internet) when it comes to LucasArts and related video games. I have contributed to some of their LucasArts' Secret History articles, writing about the use of history in The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, as well as about the architectural influences on Grim Fandango. I am also a forum moderator there, and have a Mojo-hosted site about Autumn Moon Entertainment, called The Pumpkin Post.

I was a news updater and forum moderator for The World of Monkey Island from the early 2000s until it closed down at the end of 2007. When the site was relaunched as the Tales of Monkey Island blog in 2009, I once again joined the team, writing reviews, news updates, and original features, such as History with Haggis. Both sites were favourites in the Monkey Island fan community. I was also a moderator and administrator for the World of Monkey Island forums, and I have contributed to the Monkey Island wiki.

In 2010, I started an online magazine about culture, called Cultural Zest. The idea was not to offer regular news, but rather update it now and then with quality content of interest to culturally inclined readers, while providing young writers with an opportunity to get their feet wet in the world of online writing. I have written several interviews and reviews for the site, and other team members have contributed some interesting pieces as well. Although not great in size, I still consider the site to be a success when taking into account the goal it was started with.

As well as being the copy editor (see Editing below) for The Thrillville Quarterly, a quaint online magazine about all things LucasArts, I have contributed a whimsical interview with Dave Grossman, and a short story.

If you have written a book or other textual product, you'll want to make sure it's in the best possible shape when you put it in front of your readers. One crucial step in that process is editing, and I can help you out there. I have proofread various Dutch texts, have done copy editing on the Thrillville Quarterly, which is an online magazine about video games, and I have edited the scripts on the Ultimate Monkey Island video series.
